Forest stepped proudly out of his den into the early morning sun. His deep green eyes gleaming, he waltzed over to the nursery where his mate Cherry was with their three kits. His dark brown fur was only reflected in Pinekit, Amarylliskit and Alice had Cherry's light blue eyes. He walked over to the spruce, ivy and oak dens and called inside. "Hunting patrol," he said. "Who's coming?" The redwood was without a deputy, so he took over their duties.
Cherry laid down in the nursery, her light brown fur up against her kits. She would collect herbs later; now she had to watch the Saplings. She was concerned about Pinekit, he was very tiny.
Pinekit lay on the moss bed, his strange golden eyes closed. He was small, but he was playful. He pounced on butterflies and his siblings.

Amarylliskit woke up. She nudged Hawaiiankit to wake her too. Amarylliskit and Hawaiiankit were best friends, and were the same age but not related. Looking up at her father, Forest, she asked, "are Hawaiiankit and I gonna be apprenticed soon?"

"Did you see the moon last night?" He replied teasingly. "You have about, lets see, twelve moonrises left? I have to talk to my spruce," he added as an afterthought.

Cherry woke up to find one kit gone. She twisted around, and sighed as she saw that Hawaiikit was gone to. Those two were inseparable.

Cherry smiled at her kits and Willowkit. "Why don't you three go play?"
"Okay! Come on Willowkit!" Pinekit called. Alice was asleep.

Amarylliskit peeked her head into the nursery. "Hey, Pinekit! You wanna come play with me and Hawaiiankit? Alice and Willowkit can come too if they wake up."
